September 16/18, 2009 - A major event in Belgium was the organisation of NATO's Tigermeet. Established back in 1961, Kleine Brogel based 31 squadron hosted the event 6 times earlier (1963, 1970, 1978, 1985, 1993, 2001). Still, the concept of this year's exercise was completely different. Instead of only one week, this event was spread out over a full two weeks with a total of eight flying days.
On two days, a public event was organised. September 16th saw a large local crowd gathered in some cloudy weather. Two days later, a full size airshow/spottersday was organised during the COMAO.
Tigermeets are a classic amongst military aviation enthusiasts. Tens of thousands of people gather on the spottersday that have became a classic part of such an event. There was nothing different about that this year. Since the exercise lasted for two weeks, the Belgian Air Component decided to organise two public events. The first - on September 16th - was specifically for a select audience. For the most part, local residents were invited to visit Kleine Brogel AB to see what the everyday flying of different units is all about. Although the weather was far from exemplary, a massive crowd attended this welcome event.
Mitch performed his demo in far from ideal conditions. As mentioned, the weather was a major pain, but the demo was also interfered by returning aircraft from the COMAO. This resulted in a a 'broken' display. Nothing to worry, a replay would be organised two days later.
Conditions on September 18th were far better then two days earlier. Fair weather with a nice mild temperature ans slight breeze. A massive crowd present to see all those goodies. And goodies there were.
During the visit of all participating aircraft down the flightline, it was Mitch's turn to get himself ready for the demo display. This time, it was planned exactly in between a take-off and landing cycle of the COMAO, which saw two sorties flown that day. Mitch arrived in his personnel '349' taxi.
Mitch started with his preparations. Check of the aircraft and entering afterwards with 'Ed' assisting all the way.
After Mitch performs his pre-flight checks it's just a little wait until the final go has been given and demo time has arrived. As Mitch taxis out, he salutes all of the attending visitors with the typical 'Mace'.
With fair weather, Mitch is able to perform the high altitude show presenting the crowd with a perfect performance.
After the show, Mitch returned to the Alpha zone. Shutting down the engine and opening the canopy. This marks the end of the flying display. The demo stand on the public site attracted a lot of visitors with sales of all the presented gadgets scoring very well.
It was again a great performance. See you all at Sanicole!!
